What is sales tax?

Sales tax is a consumption tax added to the price of most goods and some services at the point of sale. The seller collects it from the buyer and passes it on to the state. In the US it's set at the state level, and many cities and counties add a local tax on top, so the combined rate can be higher than the statewide base.

Three figures matter on any sales tax calculation: the price (before tax), the tax amount itself, and the total (price plus tax). This calculator works in both directions — add tax to a price, or back it out of a total — at whatever rate applies to you. When you're ready to bill, drop the figures into an invoice.

The maths

How sales tax is calculated

Adding tax

Start from the pre-tax price, multiply by the rate to get the tax, then add it back:

Tax = Price × rate
Total = Price + Tax

Removing tax (reverse)

Start from the total and divide it out to find the pre-tax price, then the difference is the tax:

Price = Total ÷ (1 + rate)
Tax = Total − Price

Worked example at 7.25%

A $100 price gains $7.25 of tax for a $107.25 total. In reverse, $107.25 total ÷ 1.0725 = $100 price, with $7.25 of tax included.

Sales tax calculator questions

Multiply the pre-tax price by the sales tax rate to get the tax amount, then add it to the price. At 7.25%, a $100 price becomes $100 × 0.0725 = $7.25 tax, for a $107.25 total. Use Add tax mode and the calculator does it for you.
Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. At 7.25%, $107.25 ÷ 1.0725 = $100 pre-tax, so the tax included was $7.25. Use Remove tax (reverse) mode to back the tax out of a total.
Sales tax is set at the state level, and many cities and counties add their own local tax on top, so the combined rate you pay can be higher than the base state rate. A few states — Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire and Delaware — charge no statewide sales tax at all.
They're similar consumption taxes but work differently. US sales tax is charged once, at the final retail sale, while VAT (common in the UK and EU) is charged at each stage of the supply chain. This tool works for any percentage rate, so it handles both — see the VAT calculator for VAT.
